MISLEADING NUTRIENT INFORMATIONS

Just the other day, my sister Jhuaynie who have been a calorie-counter since I opened her eyes to it, asked of the implication of a fat-free in a marshmallow. She voiced her confusion with the information. I assured her that marshmallows really do not have fat in them, BUT if her concern is the calorie it gives…it is loaded with calories due to sugar. I even classify it “empty calorie” since it does not have any significant vitamin or mineral.

Information such as this is mere marketing strategy that may confuse buyers amateur to nutrient consideration. They are misled into believing it is healthy. It is imperative that we read labels .…and we also have to know what information is substantial. Another example is the no cholesterol in vegetable oil. There is definitely no cholesterol in them because cholesterol can be found in animal sources and dairy products. What is imperative in a vegetable oil is the source. If it is a palm, canola, corn…etc. This is where the mono and poly unsaturated fat comes in. They are all considered good oils, but...I'll tell you more next time.

So, next time you see strategies like this, it is best that you look more than that information and read the labels. Or you might end up consuming things you really know nothing about. That instead of being beneficial, it’s unfavorable.

Michael Jackson

This again is a reminder how fragile life is. It can be taken away at any moment of your day…in any way possible. AT A BLINK many thing can happen.

And so…Live your day as if it is your last! For me – “in constant holy fear and with love in your heart”! Let us not wait for LATER to be sorry and say so; let us not think twice to show our love ones how much we love and care for them; nor do we get done with the things that MUST be done. It may be our last minute, or it may be the other persons last.

The Filipino phrase commonly heard “laging nasa huli ang pagsisisi” is appropriate to mention here, wherein regret is always after the deed has come to pass.

So, I say to you that truly…TIME IS GOLD! And I wish Michael Jackson .

believed this as well.

TOOTHBRUSHING A TODDLER

I’ve been reading a Mom’s magazine when I came across an article about a problematic mom concerning her kid that had a toothache. It was brought about by late introduction of tooth brushing to her kid. And as always, I get to compare Anya.

I am so glad that I am not having problems with Anya’s teeth. Because I am blessed with a good kid! She’s an example to being a disciplined child. We do the brushing twice a day since before she turned two and so became a routine. The fact that I don’t give her candies and chocolates often also is a factor to zero tooth decay. She enjoys it as treat once in a while…and after taking one, she has to brush right away.

But I am not the perfect mom when I read that they need to be going to the dentist already. She still has not been introduced to one. It has been my plan for the longest time but until now haven’t pushed through with it. Monetary factor is to blame. Hope I can take her soon….

SPECIAL DAYS

There were things in my life that I would like to change…but because it’s already been more than 30 years that I’ve gotten used to “not doing them”, I don’t have the guts to do them now. Some that our family have gotten used to already that its awkward to make another step than accustomed to. Like the Filipino “mano po” ( kissing the hand of elders) that we do to our grans, uncles and aunts…but not to our parents. It’s more like we’re brothers and sisters that it’s not appropriate to do such with them.

If I can, I also would like to give more significance to special occasions to demonstrate more of how much we love our love ones. And the memories to keep will be worth more than anything, I know. But Father’s Day have come and gone with a passing greeting to my papa. We’re just home and spent time with each other. There’s so much to do…then again, maybe next year I’ll have more sources to make things happen.

I’ll just start planning ahead...maybe you can give me ideas in celebrating such events by sharing how yours have gone?! =)

TONGUE-TIED

At birth, my Anya was said to be tongue-tied. It was released before we were discharged from hospital, but another pedia a few months after frankly informed me that it wasn’t fully released and is advising me to have it cut once again in a few years or my kid may have a problem with speech.

I am convinced now that not everything a doctor says is accurate, because at 2 years old, Anya speaks like an adult, with no stuttering or faltering. In fact, I am kindda hoping to hear even a little o a baby talk from her for me to hold on to her being yet-a-baby.

Yes, yes…I find her growing up way to fast! I want her to stay as a baby for a few more years if only possible, haha! I have ONE reminder left which seldom happens already…she leaves a single Filipino word when it’s suppose to be within the sentence. A very simple grammatical error. Like when she say “Bigay ko ito (sa) kanya” leaving behind the word “sa” (which is translated as “I gave this to her” leaving behind the word “to”). The very last reminder that’s why…I DON’T TRY TO CORRECT HER! =)

LACTO-INTOLERANT

Years ago, Anya’s previous pediatricians confirmed her to be lacto-intolerant, but may have a chance of out growing it. It was established the moment she started on milk formula. She either vomits right after feeding or have watery stools. And so we shifted from milk after milk…soya, to lacto-free which in turn have arisen another problem which is constipation. Not until she was a year old did we finally found the right milk, Pediasure of Abbott. She’s been using this complete nutrient formula, the best there is, since then. I even had this posted on my other blog (http://heniperrr.blogspot.com/2009/06/pediasure.html) It can actually be a sole source of nutrition, but now that she’s 3, we decided that she’s eating a lot of table foods already and can be shifted to a less dense thus cheaper milk…and is meant for pre-schoolers like her. Lactum of Meadjohnson’s my best bet. Anya liked the taste as well…unfortunately, after a week’s trial alternating with Pediasure it seems to be working well, but 2 dys ago she starte d having soft stools and this morning watery.

I suddenly remembered Dr. Livelo’s explanation before, at first her lactase can do its part in dealing with the lactose ingestion but they were not enough to do so if consumption is in large amount. And its reproduction will not be as fast and so the symptoms can be seen which I have seen but were not able to confirm right away: reddish anus and softening stools to diarrheal.

Sadly, this just meant she still hasn’t out-grown being lactose-intolerant. She can have some, but not much, since it doesn’t affect her when partaking small amounts. I wonder if she’ll ever have normal lactase production.

REUNION BATCH ‘89

An elementary classmate from my alma matter, St. Mary’s College, convinced me to seriously update my facebook account…and just this afternoon, I did!

I came across people I’ve lost contact with, and it’s really heart warming to see them once again. It brings back memories…to the point of wanting to travel back in time.

There were photos of some gatherings I wasn’t aware of. Reunions and get togethers that I’v emissed. Though those in attendance were not those I’m really close with (well, there were some, 1 or 2)…because almost all already flew some place else. Obviously, they have the sme goal as I do…leave the Philippines, haha!

WECOME TO THIS WORLD, ALEXINE!

Seven thirty in the morning of July 12th, 2009…Philippine Independence Day celebration, cousin abby’s baby finally wailed her first official cry outside her mom’s wound. Alexine A. Cornelio, named after Abby’s dad, weighing 7.11 lbs., finally quenched her parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends thirst to finally have a glimpse of her.
